Volunteers from Hershorin Schiff Community Day School with workers from American Farms after the delivery of food and other goods

After Hurricane Irma passed through, students and staff at Hershorin Schiff Community Day School collected non-perishable food and items such as toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, pet food, personal care items and cases of water. They filled two U-Hauls, a minivan and the school's cargo van with goods to help 100 farmworkers in Naples affected by the hurricane.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, The Patterson Foundation donated $250,000 to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County's disaster relief fund, $250,000 to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy's Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund and $50,000 to support NetHope disaster assessments throughout the Caribbean.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast recently received several grants. The Kates Foundation awarded the nonprofit $8,000 for its Juvenile Justice Mentoring Initiative for Sarasota and Manatee counties, the Martin Charitable Trust awarded $2,000 for student mentoring in Englewood, the Eluned and Edward Russell Charitable Foundation donated $6,000 for student mentoring, Publix Super Markets donated $20,000 for mentoring programs, the Kiwanis Foundation of Sarasota awarded $2,200 for mentoring and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation awarded $43,500 for workplace mentoring.

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation recently awarded $67,200 in emergency grants to nine local nonprofits in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Recipients included All Faiths Food Bank ($10,000), Catholic Charities ($10,000), the Education Foundation of Sarasota County ($5,000), Harvest House ($10,000), Jewish Family and Children’s Service of the Suncoast ($4,700), the Laurel Civic Association ($10,000), Marie Selby Botanical Gardens ($2,500), the Pines of Sarasota Foundation ($10,000) and the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation ($5,000).

Tervis president Rogan Donelly recently presented a check for $34,326 to Barry Jesinoski, the executive director of Disabled American Veterans. The amount was raised through their Fourth of July partnership, during which the company donated $2 from every product sold online and at the 45 Tervis stores to Disabled American Veterans.

The Our Sarasota Fund and the McCauley-Brown Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently distributed $31,000 in grants to 11 nonprofits that benefit the region's LGBT community. The organizations included Harvest House, Forty Carrots Family Center, Planned Parenthood, CARES, Embracing Our Differences, Equality Florida, the Sarasota Film Festival, the Diversity Chorus, ALSO Youth and more.

Together Manatee recently donated $25,000 to the State College of Florida Foundation for construction of a community room in the new library and learning center at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's Bradenton campus.

Forty Carrots Family Center recently received a grant of $19,481 from the Libertore Fund for Children to provide parenting education to at-risk expecting and postpartum women residing at SOLVE Maternity Homes.

The Glenridge Academy Scholarship Fund recently presented $18,000 in scholarships to nine Sarasota residents for the 2017-2018 school year. To qualify, recipients had to be either full-time, part-time or seasonal employees at The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch or the children or grandchildren of employees.

The SunTrust Foundation recently awarded a grant of $10,000 to Goodwill Manasota to promote and expand the reach of existing financial literacy training for low- and moderate-income workers, as well as adolescents.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation recently donated $5,000 to Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe for operational support.
