U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke on Tuesday announced that his department is removing Florida waters from consideration for expanded offshore oil and gas drilling. The Trump appointee had just last week announced plans to open almost all of federally controlled waters to offshore drilling, a proposal that included the sale of 12 leases in the Gulf of Mexico. Zinke wrote on Twitter that he made the decision after a discussion with Florida Gov. Rick Scott. "I support the governor's position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver," Zinke said in a statement. Governors from the states of Virginia, New York and Oregon have echoed Scott's concerns and asked that their states be removed from consideration for more offshore drilling, as well. "Local voice matters," Zinke wrote on Twitter.
